Information on joining the Happy Family

My thanks to all those who have taken part in GigDig and enjoy this
service. Your donations are enabling me to make my dreams for this
system a reality. Accounts are still available to those in need..

So you want to join us at GigDig?

We are always available to help those in need.
Otherwise...

The only option available at the current time is to watch ebay.
Sometimes I auction new accounts when I am short on cash.

The usual means of getting to GigDig is by a primary internet account, although limited dialups in the Morehead area may be available to those in need.

GigDig is geared toward those who are in need of a "secondary" internet account where they can be a little more anonymous, keep files/mail private, etc. That's not to say that GigDig can't completely meet your internet needs (it does mine and several others), but you will generally need to have have some kind of Internet access elsewhere.

Pricing is reasonable for those who will make occasional usage of the system. I don't charge for "access time", but I expect that those who give the minimum don't make a whole lot of use of system resources or stay on really long periods of time.

I allow each user about 5 MB of disk space (that's total storage, please don't send that much in and out of the host daily!). Users who give $50 or up per 12 months are considered "priority" users who have helped to provide for new resources and will receive the appropriate amount of slack, such as being able to use more disk space, and have busier WWW pages. Accounts are only given out in 12 month intervals.

GigDig users are encouraged to put up reasonable WWW pages. The pages of users who give only the minimum donation shouldn't have pages that send out over 1000 accesses or 10 MB of data per day.

Priority users are allowed 4000 accesses/day and 40 MB of data/day. I think this is very generous. The same hold similarly with disk space and other things.. those who have given more to the system deserve more slack with its resources and those who stay with the minimum should keep their usage low so that others will have plenty of opportunity to make their reasonable pages available. I reserve the right to limit or remove users whose WWW pages can't stay within limits. Normal home pages do not seem to have any problem staying within these levels.

GigDig has all the usual internet services and a multitude of other good stuff. I only ask users to be aware of the fact that bandwidth is limited. The web server and user login machine does well for transferring usual amounts of mail and keeping nice connectivity as long as users don't send a lot of files. This means that users running servers or doing a lot of file transferring (pictures or warez or whatever) is out of the question.

Unfortunately, GigDig doesn't have its own NNTP server right now. We're just too small and don't have the finances of a large provider. When (if) finances permit, GigDig will have its own news server that will allow NNTP by users.

thanks,
JD
